John Galliano’s Met Exhibition Cancelled Amid Renewed Backlash
The Metropolitan Museum of Art and designer John Galliano have cancelled the planned Costume Institute exhibition dedicated to the British designer, ending months of anticipation surrounding one of the most significant fashion retrospectives scheduled for 2027.
The exhibition, John Galliano: Horizons, was expected to examine Galliano’s influential career across couture and ready-to-wear, from his early London collections and tenure at Givenchy to his transformative years at Dior and later work at Maison Margiela. Its cancellation follows renewed criticism surrounding the designer’s history of antisemitic and racist remarks, for which he faced widespread condemnation and a French court conviction in 2011.
The decision has placed questions of accountability, rehabilitation and fashion’s relationship with controversial creative figures firmly back at the centre of industry debate.
Galliano has repeatedly acknowledged the harm caused by his behaviour and has spent more than a decade rebuilding his career. His subsequent work at Maison Margiela was widely praised for its technical innovation and conceptual approach, while his return to the highest levels of fashion was often presented as an example of professional redemption.
However, the planned Met exhibition generated significant opposition, particularly because its timing would have coincided with Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day. Critics argued that celebrating Galliano’s legacy through a major institutional retrospective at that moment would have sent an insensitive message.
The cancellation also raises broader questions for museums and fashion institutions: can creative achievement be separated from personal misconduct, and who decides when—or whether—an individual has earned a public platform again?
For the Met’s Costume Institute, the decision leaves a major gap in its 2027 programme. A replacement spring exhibition and details of the accompanying Met Gala are expected to be announced at a later date.
For Galliano, meanwhile, the cancellation represents a striking reversal in a comeback story that had increasingly appeared to have reached fashion’s most prestigious institutional stage.
