MET GALA 2025

The 2025 Met Gala unfolded on May 5 at New York City’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, embracing the theme “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style”. This year’s event spotlighted the artistry and cultural significance of Black menswear, with a particular focus on Black dandyism—a style movement rooted in self-expression and resistance dating back to the 18th century.

 Theme & Dress Code: “Tailored for You”

The accompanying exhibition, Superfine: Tailoring Black Style, featured over 250 pieces, including works by designers like Virgil Abloh, Grace Wales Bonner, Dapper Dan, and Foday Dumbuya. The dress code, aptly named “Tailored for You”, encouraged attendees to reinterpret classic tailoring through a personal and culturally resonant lens.

• Rihanna made headlines by revealing her third pregnancy in a custom Marc Jacobs ensemble, seamlessly blending maternity wear with high fashion. 

• Zendaya captivated in a Louis Vuitton creation, complete with a dramatic hat, embodying the evening’s theme with elegance. 

• Colman Domingo, serving as a co-chair, donned a striking Valentino suit, exemplifying modern dandyism. 
• Lewis Hamilton opted for a tailored look by Wales Bonner, merging athleticism with sartorial sophistication. 
• Pharrell Williams stood out in Louis Vuitton, accessorized with Tiffany & Co. jewelry, showcasing his signature style. 
• Chance the Rapper paid homage to Tupac Shakur, wearing a Versace ensemble that celebrated Black artistry and the diaspora. 
• Diana Ross returned to the Met Gala after two decades, gracing the red carpet in a glittering gown with an 18-foot shawl embroidered with the names of her children and grandchildren. 

• Priyanka Chopra wore a Balmain outfit inspired by a vintage 1952/53 collection, reimagined by creative director Olivier Rousteing. 
• Oscar-nominated actor Demi Moore took to the Met Gala steps in a custom striped gown by Thom Browne

• Madonna honored the theme in a custom ivory satin tuxedo by Haider Ackermann for Tom Ford, complete with a matching bow tie, cummerbund and boutonnière.

 Cultural Significance

This year’s Met Gala was lauded for its celebration of Black fashion and identity. British Vogue editor Chioma Nnadi highlighted the event’s importance in showcasing Black self-expression.  The exhibition and attendees’ interpretations underscored the rich history and contemporary relevance of Black tailoring and style.
