31st of March 2023, Mumbai, India – The city of Mumba, India was turned to a spectacular catwalk by Dior which showcased its Pre-Fall 2023 collection at the historical landmark Gate of India.
Maria Grazia Chiuri chose to present the Fall 2023 Dior designs in a location like Mumbai which blends tradition and a rich history of the country with business and fashion.
The runway has been adorned with florals and traditional Indian motifs under the accords played by live musicians as Indian craftsmanship and artistry was showcased on stage by the cast of model.
While the show opened with a set of neutrals it slowly continued to blend into a forest green and afterwards to bold colours and patterns.
Maria Grazia Chiuri: “I personally wanted to celebrate and showcase the incredible knowledge India offers to the international world of fashion in the field of embroidery, the mastery of the artisans who continue to work on this craft, and the commitment of Chanakya’s founders to preserving India’s history and culture, portrayed by each embroidery technique,” (source: Instagram)
Dior has had a long collaboration with India through the Mumbai based atelier, Chanakya which works with artisans and underprivileged women.
On the runway the designs that could be seen beautifully blended the Dior house codes with traditional Indian sari – inspired colours, traditional patterns to reference the traditional Indian silhouettes.
Model Karlie Kloss, Freida Pinto, Indian actor Rekha, cricketer Virat Kohli, Anushka Sharma, Sonam Kapoor Ahuja, Miss Bridgerton stars Charithra Chandran and Simone Ashley were also in attendance along with Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams could be seen at the iconic show.
Dior has put a spotlight on the Indian luxury fashion market just as other Western brands like Pierre Cardin, Yves Saint Laurent or Valentino have done in the past.
