The WEDNESDAY ADDAMS phenomenon

Wednesday Addams

Wednesday Addams is all about Goth-Prep Style

At a time when everything is worn and nothing is worn, it also happens that trends are born from every conceivable place.

Social media has become the most significant non-stop trendsetter and screen style has much to do with it.Once it’s seen it is only a matter of spreading the voice…and the look!

Wednesday Adams is the star character of the latest fiction series directed by Tim Burton with Jenna Ortega as the protagonist who reinterprets the character first time seen in the cartoons of Charles Addams played by Christina Ricci in The Addams Family in 1991.

The series’s success has been such that it became the most-watched English-language production in a single week in the history of Netflix. It accumulated 341.2 million hours of viewing time. For this reason, fashion can not be left behind a character sweeping the search for inspiration for outfits, makeup and gothic, dark and vamp aesthetics.

Costume designer Colleen Atwood brings Goth Core to life in each outfit created for the series. She reformulates what already existed with modern and even luxury touches of Alaïa’s or Prada’s creations for example, inspiring the one who’s willing to imitate Wednesday’s style which, for sure, won’t stay only on the screen…

Gothcore is coming and will dictate ‘musts‘ and ‘mustnots’ in the seasons of 2023.

Ready to explore Wednesday’s look and mood? Let’s review some of her most iconic styles and let ourselves inspired by her style!

  1. The unique black dress – The essence of the character that we have been seeing in different representations for more than 5 decades is not lost and the garment that identifies her is kept intact, perfectly matching with the girl dressed in a ball gown, her braids, pale face and a chilling vibe. The black dress with shirt collar gets all the looks in the first episode.

  1. Grunge shoes with a high platform – The grunge shoes with a huge platform very well used by Jenna in the Monolith’s by Prada version, appear on several occasions very stylish, chunky and with laces.

  1. Dark Academy Aesthetics – The one that swept Tik Tok and Pinterest a few months ago is back in the lead. As if she was straight out of a Thom Browne fashion show, Wednesday’s uniform to attend Nevermore is the perfect description of these scholarly references – think rainy days in dark libraries and empty museums. Striped print (blue or black), shirt, knit vest and tie are the essentials. We know it’s early days but if you’re daydreaming about a Halloween costume for next year, this uniform is an excellent idea.

  1. The iconic ruffle dress – One of the most acclaimed looks of the series is the party dress worn by Wednesday during a ball. A lace and sheer Alaia that the designer found on Bond Street in London. Movement, elegance, transparencies and fluidity come with force!

  1. The Addams Style Athleisure – It can’t all be uncomfortable dresses or skirts, remember we are talking about a Gen Z girl trapped in the 21st century. If you are looking for something more modern but still maintaining the mysterious aesthetic, oversized sweatshirts, plaid prints and rugby polo shirts are the perfect mix.

Fashion has always been a vehicle for expression and this aesthetic has been present throughout the years. The new era is what is visible in every stitch of Atwood’s creations. A new age gothic visionary who pays homage to the original work but focuses on street style proving that this new generation is infinitely multifaceted and not interested in being pigeonholed.

Wearing black, wearing creepers, fishnet stockings, chokers and all those elements that make up the gothic aesthetic will always, always return to fashion.
